The Lagos State Parks and Gardens Agency (LASPARK) has teamed up with the National Basketball Association of Africa (NBA Africa) and Hennessy to renovate the basketball court at Ikorodu Recreational Park.
Mrs. Adetoun Popoola, the General Manager of LASPARK, said the refurbishment of the sports facility is part of the Agency’s efforts to contribute to the growth and development of adolescents in the State, speaking at the commissioning and handover ceremony of the NBA Legacy Basketball Court in Ikorodu.
She emphasized LASPARK’s commitment to working with the private sector on projects that promote community harmony, stating that NBA Africa is a worldwide sports and media company dedicated to expanding access to the game of basketball across Africa through court infrastructure development.
The rebuilt playing field, according to Popoola, would increase sporting activities in the area and complement the State government’s efforts to actively engage adolescents.
Gbemisola Abudu, Vice President of NBA Africa, also spoke, thanking the Lagos State Government for establishing an enabling environment that allowed the Court to be delivered quickly.
She noted that the commissioning is noteworthy because it coincides with the NBA’s 75th anniversary celebrations as well as the opening of the NBA office in Nigeria.
Abudu acknowledged Nigeria’s enormous contribution to the game, stating that the NBA will continue to play a role in the country’s burgeoning basketball environment. She also revealed that Nigeria will be home to one of the NBA’s many planned African courts.
The NBA believes in the transforming power of basketball for social good, and that the court will be a site of remembrance for many children, according to the Vice President of NBA Africa, who stated that youths have a lot to gain from the game.
The Court, which has just been refurbished, is a standard regulation basketball court that fulfills international standards. Because the court’s original surface size was less than the statutory minimum, the perimeter was enlarged. Its fences were made locally as part of NBA Africa’s promotion of local content.
A layer of modular synthetic weather-resistant material is laid over the playing surface. The sport court layer has been specifically designed to improve shock absorption, lower the danger of impact damage, and provide the best mix of abrasion resistance and dry traction.
