Food waste: Causes, environmental impact, and recommendations

Today, I get to talk about food waste, ways to curb it, and solutions to converting food waste into a resource.

Food waste is known as food loss, this can happen at the different stages from manufacture to consumption.

There is an impact that food waste has on the environment but before we discuss that, let us talk about why we have food waste.

Causes of food waste

  • The state of the power supply in Nigeria makes food preservation difficult. This results in food waste especially in the case of perishable foods.
  • Overconsumption is another reason why we have food wastage. This is when people buy food excessively without them consuming it.
  • One of the reasons for food waste is a shortage of storage facilities. This results in food going to waste because there is no way to store it
  • Our transportation system also makes it laborious to convey food easily.

There are many more reasons we can point to food waste like excessive cooking without preservation and many more. This then leads me to how food waste impacts the environment.

Environment impact of food waste.

  • Food waste releases methane as it decomposes, this contributes majorly to climate change.
  • When we throw food out, we waste the gallons of water that have gone into planting and producing it.

Hey, welcome to my favorite part of my articles, yes you guessed right, time to proffer the solutions.

Recommendations

  • This was a constant when I was in University instead of throwing out uneaten stew, turn it into concoction rice. Learn the art of turning uneaten food into a new meal to avoid food waste.
  • Meal planning is something we hear a lot about in the fitness world. Planning your food ahead of time prevents food waste.
  • Composting is a great way to turn your food waste into a resource. Food scraps enhance the soil and help it sustain moisture.
  • We cannot leave out the impact of education at the different stages of the food chain.

This is one of my favorite recommendations. The Lagos state government should look into the anaerobic digestion of food waste. The product from this process can be used as organic fertilizer and biogas, a source of energy.

Conclusion

There is no one way to a sustainable environment, our collective little steps can amount to a big win for the environment. From today, choose to make better choices to prevent food wastage.

Until my next post, play your part in being kind to the environment.

  1. The part of turning it to a concoction is what I can really relate it when it comes to preventing food wastage.

  2. Thank you for this post. For a state with so many people living below the poverty level, it is sad that we are still wasteful with food. It’s a culture I wish we find a way to balance.

  3. If a lot of us embrace urban farming at least some of the composting you mentioned can be used in our gardens of fresh vegetables, peppers and fruits. Thank you for your write up.
